La popularidad de los formatos de archivos sin procesar está aumentando rápidamente en los flujos de trabajo de fotografía digital, ya que estos archivos ofrecen a los profesionales un mayor control creativo. Sin embargo, las cámaras emplean una gran variedad de formatos de archivos sin procesar. Como las especificaciones de dichos formatos no están disponibles públicamente, no todos los archivos sin procesar son reconocidos por las aplicaciones de software. Por ello, el uso de estos archivos sin formato patentados como solución de almacenamiento a largo plazo supone un cierto riesgo y el intercambio de estos archivos a través de flujos de trabajo complejos es aún más arriesgado.
¿Cuál es la solución a este problema cada vez más grave? El negativo digital (DNG) es un formato de archivo disponible para el público para los archivos sin procesar generados por las cámaras digitales. El DNG suple así la falta de un estándar abierto para los archivos sin procesar generados por diferentes modelos de cámaras, al tiempo que permite a los fotógrafos acceder a sus archivos en un futuro.
En el transcurso de un año desde su presentación, varias docenas de fabricantes de software, como Extensis, Canto, Apple y iView se han adaptado para ser compatibles con DNG. Y los prestigiosos fabricantes de cámaras Hasselblad, Leica, Ricoh y Samsung ha diseñado cámaras que proporcionan compatibilidad directa con DNG.
